University Counselling

Friday 24 September

The aim of this workshop is to provide those involved in university counselling with detailed guidance on the admissions systems in the UK and US. The workshop will begin by comparing and contrasting the two systems. Among the topics covered will be: different types of colleges and universities, costs and scholarships, and types of programmes offered. The session on UK universities will look at the components of the UCAS system and give particular attention to the personal statement and writing references. The session on US universities will look at standardised testing, the Common Application Form, deadline strategies, decision making, visas, and visits & interviews. Teacher recommendations & references will be discussed, and participants will be given some insights in to how decisions are actually made. The two presenters have experience in matching applicants to colleges bearing in mind expected examination performance, and they will use anonymised applications to illustrate good and bad practice.
